Bethesda Releases Free Fallout 4 Next
Bethesda has now extended the free Fallout 4 next-gen update to include those who obtained the game through the PlayStation Plus Collection, addressing confusion that arose when the update first went live.
Initially, not all PlayStation gamers who accessed Fallout 4 through PlayStation Plus could get the free upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version. Although the update was available to PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers, players who had received the game via the PlayStation Plus Collection seemed left out. However, Bethesda has since clarified the situation, ensuring that all PS Plus subscribers, including those who got Fallout 4 through the PlayStation Plus Collection, can now access the next-gen update.
Bethesda acknowledged the issue in a statement: "Thanks for letting us know that some PS Plus subscribers have been unable to access the free next-gen update of Fallout 4 on PlayStation," the company said. "This issue has now been successfully resolved. Subscribers who have previously received Fallout 4 from the PlayStation Plus Collection should now be able to access the update as intended."
The PlayStation Plus Collection was a special promotion that provided PS5 owners with a selection of PS4 games, including Bloodborne, Persona 5, and Fallout 4. However, this offering was removed from the service in May last year.
Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update: A Rough Launch
Despite its long-anticipated release, the Fallout 4 next-gen update had a troubled launch. In addition to issues affecting PlayStation players, the PC version faced technical problems. Xbox users also found that their version lacked the promised Quality Mode, which was supposed to bring 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. Bethesda tweeted that the Xbox Series X version aimed to maintain 4K and 60 frames per second in all modes, with Performance Mode lowering settings to achieve this target.
Timing and Mod Compatibility Challenges
The release of Fallout 4's next-gen update coincided with the success of Amazon's Fallout TV show on Prime Video, but the timing also inadvertently affected the Fallout London mod. This mod relies on third-party modifications that the PC patch has broken, leading to further disappointment among fans.
Bethesda's response to the initial update issues shows the importance of maintaining good communication with players and addressing problems promptly. The next-gen update's rough launch underscores the complexities of delivering upgrades across multiple platforms, especially with a game that has such a passionate and engaged fan base.
